Marseille striker William Saliba has been ruled out for up to two months with a knee injury.

The 19-year-old, who joined the Ligue 1 club from Arsenal in July 2019, was forced off during the team's 1-0 win over Nice on Sunday after appearing to twist his knee.

He underwent scans on Monday and it was confirmed that he had suffered a ligament damage to his right knee.

"Saliba is going to be out for at least the next two months," said Marseille manager Lucien Favre.

"The doctor told us he would have to undergo surgery and we will know more tomorrow."

Favre added that Saliba had undergone a "very aggressive treatment" but warned that the player could still face a longer recovery period.

"We hope to get him back as soon as possible, but it will depend on how he responds to the treatment," he said.

"It's not easy to make such a big decision when you're dealing with something like this, but I'm sure he'll come through it."

It comes after Saliba missed the first half of the season due to a hamstring injury, which also required surgery.

Despite his absence, Marseille remain top of the table and are hoping to secure their place in the Champions League knockout stages.
